HACKENSACK, NJ — A customer apparently hit the wrong pedal when leaving a carwash here, and she ended up in the Hackensack River, according to The Record.
The July 22 story stated that a carwash employee and a customer quickly jumped into the river to rescue the elderly woman. John Goez is an employee of Spotless Auto Laundry, and he was aided by customer Jay Orsino.
“I thought about my own mother,” Goez said in the story. “I kept telling her, ‘Don’t worry, we’re going to get you out of here.’ We couldn’t open the door because of the water pressure. Thank God the window was half open. We got her through the window.” The driver had minor injuries that were treated at a nearby hospital.
Firefighters launched a boat to see if there were other occupants in the vehicle. The car was then secured to the shore line, and a tow truck was used to retrieve the car. No firefighters were injured.
