DALLAS — Tommy Terrific’s Carwash recently presented local high school student David Juan with a $5,000 scholarship for college tuition, according to a press release.
Established this year, stated the release, the “Live Terrific” scholarship is available to high school seniors who are currently enrolled at Woodrow Wilson High School.
Tom and Kim Miller, owners of Tommy Terrific’s Carwash, are “passionate about education and community involvement,” continued the release, and the pair founded the Live Terrific scholarship in order to reward and help ease the financial burden of a student who contributes to the betterment of the local community.
“As part of a growing company, we are positioned to give directly back to our community by helping a local student further their collegiate goals,” said Kim Miller in the release. “Since we opened in 2013, we’ve employed several Woodrow Wilson students and felt they were a natural fit to partner with.”
Students who applied for the scholarship were asked to answer the essay question “How are you terrific in your community?” as well as submit a financial aid questionnaire, reported the release.
While academic achievement and extracurricular activities were noted, informed the release, applicants were encouraged to focus on specific examples of community betterment and how their involvement impacted their higher education goals.
Juan, who has been accepted to the University of Texas at Arlington, was selected from more than a dozen finalists to receive the scholarship, stated the release.
Following his experience with the 2015 Mayor’s Intern Fellows Program for which he worked with a civil engineering/architecture firm, added the release, Juan is pursuing a degree in architecture.
“Architecture is a great major because I can work to make my community a better place,” stated Juan in the release. “I want to build affordable homes for those who are not as fortunate.”
He has also helped better the local community through various volunteer engagements serving the homeless, continued the release.
Kim Miller recently met Juan at Woodrow Wilson’s awards ceremony luncheon and presented him with the Live Terrific scholarship, noted the release.
“It was such a joy to meet our first scholarship recipient and extend our well wishes to David as he begins his college career,” shared Miller in the release.
Tommy Terrific’s Carwash, based in Dallas, is an independently owned express exterior carwash with two locations, noted the release, and since 2008 the company has washed over one million cars and employs around 40 team members, all earning a living wage.
Tommy Terrific’s Carwash is part of parent company, The Car Wash Companies, which also includes TradeMark Carwash, a full-service wash with locations in Allen and Plano, Texas, added the release.
