Immigration sweep at carwash yields 2 arrests
Tuesday, October 20, 2009

PEORIA, AZ — Nine people were questioned and two were arrested during an investigation of On Your Wash Carwash and Quick Lube, according to KSAZ.

The Oct. 17 story said the city’s sheriff recently had some of his power taken away in relation to investigations of undocumented workers, but continued a sweep of local businesses this weekend anyway.

According to the story, an earlier ruling found that illegal immigrants must first be arrested for another crime before they can be arrested for immigration violations.

The news station said On Your Way was searched because employees were suspected of engaging in identity theft, the article said. Two people were arrested for using a fake ID and another seven were turned over to ICE because they could not prove their citizenship.

"I think it's bullcrap. Let them work. The Sheriff's department should take care of real criminals, not people who are working," said employee Josh Hernandez.

According to the article, deputies also arrested a manager for driving on a suspended license.
