Environmentally safe charity carwashes promoted in California
Tuesday, March 26, 2002
PANORAMA CITY, CA — State Sen. Richard Alarcon joined actor and environmentalist Ed Begley Jr. and representatives from the city of Los Angeles to promote a city campaign in encouraging environmentally safe charity carwashes.

Gary Lee Moore, stormwater program manager for the city, said carwash fundraisers are important for schools and organizations, so they're being encouraged in a way that it will minimize stormwater pollution, according to an article in Splash, a newsletter put out by the city's Department of Public Works, Bureau of Sanitation.

Moore said many people don't realize car-cleaning activities can hurt the environment when the washwater, containing cleaning materials, washes into stormwater drains, the article said.

One of the aims was to distribute a free guide written by Car Wash Guys founder Lance Winslow III, How to Run a Successful Car Wash Fundraiser, to non-profit organizations and middle and high schools citywide.

The fundraiser was conducted using the tips for minimizing pollution, the article said.

The guide targets reduction of polluted runoff from carwash fundraisers.

The fundraiser was also held to help send the Pacoima Singers Musical Theatre Group of Pacoima Middle School to Washington, DC to participate in the America Sings Festival, the newsletter said. Performing songs and dances between cars, 20 singing teenagers washed cars while executing a pump, sandbags and a power washer, the newsletter said.

How to Run a Successful Car Wash Fundraiser is free to city schools, non-profit organizations, community, religious and youth groups.
