HAMPSHIRE, England — When a local businessman planned to transform an old petrol station into a new carwash, the local environment hindered him, according to the Southern Daily Echo.
Amerjit Kalirai had to withdraw his plans and get a new ecological survey when concerns were raised about the impact the proposed wash could have on the nearby River Itchen and its wildlife, noted the article.
A impact survey had looked at several animals, but not otters, reported the article. The Environment Agency was concerned because it was not clear how materials from the wash would be prevented from entering the river.

According to Kalirai, in the article, a second study showed the wash would not affect the otters’ movement or habitat.
The site’s underground tanks have been removed to prevent accidental drainage, stated the article, and a fence will be constructed to protect the area from spray caused by the wash.
