Workplace safety tips for carwashes

CORTLAND, N.Y. — In 2013, a carwash worker had a foot crushed in a conveyor. A CW Insurance blog has advice on how to avoid accidents like that one from occurring.

CORTLAND, N.Y. — National Carwash Program Specialist at McNeil and Company, Mike Benmosche, has some advice on how your wash can avoid on-the-job injuries, according to a CW Insurance blog.

In 2013, a wash worker suffered a crushed foot on a conveyor. Benmosche said “developing a system to identify hazards in the workplace along with corrective actions is paramount in keeping employees safe.”

He said the first step is using personal protection equipment. The other two options to prevent and control hazardous situations are “engineering the exposure out of the job or invoking the administrative procedures to minimize or eliminate the condition.”

Benmosche provides many options for how wash users can improve safety at their business. For engineering controls, he said that it is important to make sure that employees use proper slip resistant footwear and for the business to add drainage for water runoff.

Some examples of administrative controls are to create an easily applicable process for filling out accident reports, and using a daily inspection list.
