Dr. Joseph Enning’s son, Richard Enning, sent out a message on Friday to those within the carwash industry about his father’s passing on May 8:
“On behalf of our whole family I have to inform you that my father passed away last night at the age of 85.
“After a long fight against prostate cancer he finally slept away in peace. He was the center of our business and family life.
“We will miss him desperately.

Enning, the founder of the German Mr. Wash chain, was given the “Brian Campbell Innovation Award” by the International Carwash Association (ICA) in 2010.
Tom Hoffman Jr., the CEO of Hoffman Car Wash, said about Enning’s passing: “The industry has lost a giant. One of the greatest innovators and friends I've had the honor of knowing.“
