MUTARE, ZIMBABWE — Businesses in the Central Business District were without water after their taps ran dry.
The Manica Post story says the suddenly dry taps are the result of illegal open-bucket carwashes.
The operators of the illegal outfits tamper with pipeline valves to gain access to free water.
“We have since engaged our municipal police to look into the matter. Apart from that we are now in hot weather and we are trying to adjust the system to meet the new demand for water,” City Engineer Donaldson Nyatoti said. “Households use a lot of water during this time of the year yet we are having limited supplies due to constraints with our conveyance capacity.”
The situation is exacerbated by a stalled pipe augmentation deal in which the government was defrauded $330,000 by a dubious pipe deal.
