Woman detailer gains respect, customers

PHOENIX — "I got a lot of compliments from men who said, 'Good for you,'..." says Kristy Lang.

PHOENIX — Kristy Lang, owner of Kristy Kleen Automotive Detailing, knew the risks involved when she opened her own detailing business back in 2008, The StarPhoenix reported. Firstly, she was only 23; and secondly, it was and still is a male-dominated industry.

The Dec. 6 story quoted Lang who stated, "It was scary being a 23-year-old in the business industry — and in a man's industry. It was terrifying."

At first, customers hardly acknowledged her, she said, and suppliers "scoffed" when she bought parts. But soon thereafter, people took notice of her high-quality work.

Lang, who mostly works on company vehicles, said in the story, "It's statistically proven that women have a better eye for detail. I got a lot of compliments from men who said, 'Good for you for stepping up and taking this challenge.'"

During her first year, Lang worked alone. Today, she has four employees, including three females and one male.

"To see where I was five years ago and to see where I am now, I don't even recognize myself. It doesn't even feel real sometimes," Lang stated in the story.

According to research compiled by  International Carwash Association (ICA), bay wash formats — in-bay automatics (IBA) and self-serves — consist of approximately 72% of all retail carwash locations in the U.S. That share of the pie is even higher in Europe and Australia — where IBAs and self-serve locations comprise 88% and 97% of total locations respectively, notes ICA. But, while these formats aren’t new, what’s happening in and around these bays is changing with the times.
