At-home style carwash fundraisers restricted in Arlington

ARLINGTON, Va. — Boy Scouts Troop 162 in Arlington wanted to raise money with a church parking lot fundraiser but found out that the only at-home style washing that’s allowed is at your house, according to The Washington Post.

ARLINGTON, Va. — The tradition of raising money through at-home style carwash fundraisers is drying up in Arlington, according to The Washington Post.

This is due to increased stormwater regulations in the region, notes the article. While these issues haven been debated on the West Coast for years, they’re new to the Washington area, states the story.

“If it was one carwash, we wouldn’t be having a conversation,” said Kim Coble, vice president of environmental protection and restoration for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. “But for every school group in every school in the entire [area], that is thousands and thousands of carwashes, and it really is considered a problem.”

Arlington officials have tightened regulations on carwash fundraisers, and there are debates on both sides of the issue, notes the article. Some believe it is overregulation by the government, and others see it as a way to help the environment.
