Wawa to present 10th Annual Environmental Community Service Award

PHILADELPHIA — The award recognizes schools (sixth grade and higher) for programs that enhance and improve quality of life in their communities through environmental programs.

PHILADELPHIA — Nominations for Wawa’s Environmental Community Service Award are being accepted, according to a press release. Wawa, 6ABC and environmental law firm Manko, Gold, Katcher & Fox LLP will present the award, which recognizes region-wide schools (sixth grade and higher) for programs that enhance and improve quality of life in their communities through environmental programs.

Two schools will receive $5,000 to further their environmental programs, noted the release. Eighteen schools in the tri-state area have received the award since its inception.

Schools have been recognized for a variety of initiatives, stated the release, including a horticultural program to students with employability skills who have leaning, emotional and behavior needs.

Another winning program addressed the lack of green space and fresh food options in South Philadelphia, reported the release.

Richard Wood, sustainability manager for Wawa, said in the release, “We have always felt that this award program is a unique way to recognize students for their efforts to make our planet more sustainable and share their ideas and achievements with the community.”

Applications will be accepted until March 9, and can be accessed here. Surprise presentations will be made at the winning schools before Earth Day in April.
