SEQUIM, WA — A detail shop that opened up in an old Texaco station here is not allowed to update the pole sign due to city codes, Peninsula Daily News reported.
The April 11 story stated that the pole sign still advertises the station's last incarnation as an express lube and filter shop. The sign draws customers to the business even though the detail shop doesn't offer these services.
The science of good signage
Owner of Skunk Works Auto Detailing Linda Chamness, who opened the business on March 30, wanted to replace the signs. She even had new signs designed for the pole.
While the city cannot require the out-of-code pole sign to come down, it also can't allow the sign to change.
Plastic currently covers the sign, and now the city is negotiating to purchase the lot.
