Study shows commercial textiles more sustainable than disposables

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — An independent study showed reusable products have a lower environmental impact.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — An independent study commissioned by textile services trade association TRSA indicates reusable textiles (cloth) have less environmental impact than their disposable counterparts (paper/synthetic), according to a press release.

These products can include cloths used in detailing, cleaning and other areas.

The study looked at the natural resources needed and waste generated during the manufacturing, distribution, usage and disposal phases of various products, said the release.

Disposables’ environmental impacts are mostly driven by raw materials and manufacturing energy, while reusables’ impacts are affected primarily by laundering and raw materials production, explained the release.

Exponent, an engineering and scientific consulting company, conducted the study.
