Australian carwash mogul convicted, fined for underpaying employees

SYDNEY — Anthony Sahade was found guilty of underpaying vulnerable workers.

SYDNEY — Crystal Carwash Café director and part-owner Anthony Sahade has been found guilty of underpaying more than 350 employees, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Sahade was caught underpaying more than 350 workers by nearly $180,000 in total. The employees were mostly young people from non-English-speaking backgrounds, said the article.

The carwash chain was fined more than $70,000, and Sahade himself was ordered to pay $10,000 in penalties. Peter Khouri, the man responsible for the company’s payroll, was also fined $10,000.

Many employees were paid a $13 flat rate with no payment for overtime work. Factoring in overtime, the workers were entitled to receive more than $21 per hour, plus underpayment of the minimum hourly rate, explained the article.

The underpayments occurred between January and September 2010 and were rectified after Fair Work inspectors investigated, noted the article.
