Interesting facts about the so-called Windy City

1. McCormick Place is the nation’s largest convention center measuring in at 2.2 million square feet.

2. The Harold Washington Library (The Chicago Public Library) contains more than 2 million books.

3. Chicago is home to television’s first soap opera. “These Are My Children,” was broadcast from Chicago’s NBC station in 1949.

4. The world’s largest water filtration plant, The Jardine Water Purification Plant, can be found at 600 E. Grand Ave.

5. The Windy City isn’t Chicago’s only nickname. Other monikers include: Second City, The City That Works, and the City of Big Shoulders.

6. Despite the aforementioned nickname, Chicago is not the windiest city in America; that distinction goes to Milton, Mass.

7. Harrison Ford, Ernest Hemingway, Mr. T, Dorothy Hamill, Bob Newhart, Bob Fosse, Robin Williams and Walt Disney were all born in Chicago.

8. Deep-dish “Chicago-style” pizza was started at Pizzeria Uno in Chicago in 1943.
