YAKIMA, Wash. — Rocendo Arias was fatally shot at a carwash on Jan. 4, by Officer Casey Gillette, according to the Yakima Herald.
It has now come out that Gillette had previously been disciplined in 2013 for punching a man in the face during an investigation.
Capt. Rod Light, is a police spokesperson for the Yakima force, and said “we’re not going to make a nexus between an incident that happened last year versus the most recent incident.”
According to police. Gillette was investigating a car that appeared suspicious, and when approaching it, saw Arias with what appeared to be a real gun, but turned out to be a pellet gun. Gillette then shot and killed Arias.
The investigation of the Jan. 4 crime is still ongoing. Light said that in order to determine if the shooting was within his rights may take “several weeks.”
