Community board sides with ‘noisy’ carwash

NEW YORK — There has been a flurry of noise complaints about Z Best Car Wash here that resulted in its closing.

NEW YORK — Even though there were a flurry of noise complaints about Z Best Car Wash here, the community board voted unanimously in support of the business, Sheepshead Bites reported.

The March 13 blog stated that angry residents had petitioned the board to ask that the carwash be closed for good. The carwash had been padlocked by the Department of Buildings and was not allowed to operate due to an expired zoning variance.

Residents used information from Google Maps to show that the wash had been closed for two years and the previous business' zoning variance had expired. After voting unanimously to grant the carwash a new variance, the board wondered why there was so much animosity between both sides.

“It is a travesty and embarrassment that the Department of Building’s has acted this way, and I think it’s a travesty that the politicians can’t speak the same language — that you have a politician that strongly supports this business and a politician that’s strongly against it,” one board member said in the story. “I think it’s a shame that everybody has to come to this body just to speak with each other.”

Though many residents are still angry over the noise the carwash produces, the wash's next door neighbor stated that on-site improvements have reduced the problems. As a condition for the variance renewal, the wash owner promised in writing to install a canopy to help with noise concerns.
