C-store/carwash pushes for oversized sign

LAKE IN THE HILLS, IL — The architect said smaller signs would be obscured by trees and power poles.

LAKE IN THE HILLS, IL — A new c-store and carwash owner here wants the village board to relax some of its rules and allow an oversized sign, the First Electric Newspaper reported.

The Dec. 12 story stated that the architect told the board the signs needed to be bigger than normal because they would be obscured by trees, power poles and traffic signs. Glogovsky Oil Company would offset almost doubling the sign size by using smaller signs elsewhere on the site.

The board had given the request an informal “thumbs down” in July, and most were not happy to see the subject brought up again. Planning and Zoning Commission Member Bill Dustin, who lives in the area, said the sign would be too bright for the neighborhood.

Still, the architect insisted the sign was needed or people would drive past the business before they even noticed it.

"You seem to have gotten a few people here a tad upset," Village President Ed Plaza said during the meeting. He and the trustees sent the project back to the drawing board.
