Dallas City Council makes first move to shut down carwash

DALLAS — The fate of the carwash now lies with the Board of Adjustment.

DALLAS — According to www.dfw.cbslocal.com, the Dallas City Council took the first step in trying to shut down Jim’s Car Wash, which has been in business for over 20 years.

Zoning laws changed in the city, and the carwash no longer complies with them, the article continued; as such, the council voted to send the issue to the Board of Adjustment, which will ultimately decide whether or not the carwash remains open.

City Councilman Kevin Felder, who is working to shut down the business, said, “Over a number of years, there’s been arrests for drugs, people drinking, prostitutes, gambling and all sorts of things happening at that carwash.”

Dale Davenport, who owns the carwash, remarked, “My dad and I bought it, fixed it up and got it in operation. We wanted to be a part of the revitalization in south Dallas. Yes, there is crime down here and I will not argue that, but we have a program with Dallas police. Any time they want to they can come out on the property, all they have to do is show up. They have a right to write a criminal trespass [and] get people off the property.”

Both the city council and Davenport will have a chance to present their cases to the board before it makes a decision, the article noted.

However, if a decision is made to shut down the carwash, Davenport will still get to keep his property, the article added.

While Davenport said he would consider opening another business, he was unsure of what kind and is only focused right now on saving the carwash, the article concluded.
