Modern carwash with local feel

TRUCKEE, Calif. — The owner of Cross Roads Car Wash originally got into the business to have a schedule that would allow him to hit the slopes whenever he wanted and 20 years later he's still in business, according to the Tahoe Daily Tribune.

TRUCKEE, Calif. — When Mark Lowenstern got into the carwash business in 1983, he was more concerned with having days off to go skiing than cleaning cars, according to the Tahoe Daily Tribune.

The owner of Cross Roads Car Wash first got the idea of getting into the business when he read it was one of the best jobs for a skier to be able to hit the slopes, and as luck would have it, a friend was looking to get out of the carwash business. He moved from Colorado to California, and officially became a carwash owner.

Cross Roads has five self-serve bays and one service station, notes the article. As the demographics in Truckee have changed, the detailing end of his business has improved, and Lowenstern said his wash details cars worth over $100,000.

As a promotion, Cross Roads offers a discount to customers who show proof of paid parking in Truckee, which he said is a way to support the community.

The wash recycles 90 percent of its water, and plans to add solar panels to the roof, Lowenstern said. This year in order to modernize the wash, pay touchscreen stations and the ability to pay via smartphones will be added, Lowenstern noted in the article.

Business hasn’t always been easy for Lowenstern, who said the winter is particularly challenging when soap lines freeze, and they have to keep the floors from freezing. However, he said as the owner of a carwash, “I never [have] to ask for work off on powder days.”
