WEST DES MOINES, IA ― W.A. “Bill” Krause, creator of one of the largest c-store chains in the Midwest, Kum & Go, has passed away at the age of 78, the Des Moines Register reported.
The June 19 story said Krause is seen as a pioneer of the c-store format, having started selling milk, bread and eggs at a gas station/carwash in the 1950s.
Convenience stores see growth
Krause founded his first gas station in 1959 after going into business with his father-in-law. That company grew and became known as Kum & Go and now has 420 stores in 11 states.
