AUSTIN, TX — An environmental group is ready to take on a company here that treats liquid carwash and restaurant waste, Valley Morning Star reported.
The April 15 story stated that the San Antonio-based company has plans to use a local sewer plant to treat the waste from various businesses. The Texas Campaign for the Environment is now opposing a state bill that would ease restrictions on operators that dispose grease trap waste, grit trap waste and septage on land.
Partners Dewatering International, the company that planned to treat the liquid waste at the sewer plant, composts solid grease trap and grit trap waste. The controversial bill would ease permitting for the disposal of such sludge on land, and it would remove a requirement of providing the public notification of intent to apply for a such a permit.

In 2008, a Rio Hondo City Commission entered into a contract to allow the company to use the city's sewer treatment plant to treat liquid waste from businesses. City commissioners voted in March to terminate the contract a month after residents and environmentalists opposed the proposal.
It was feared the process would contaminate the Arroyo Colorado.
