City council to consider carwash’s liquor license request

MCHENRY, Ill. — A carwash hopes to have drinks and a gaming area for waiting customers.

MCHENRY, Ill. — According to www.nwherald.com, the McHenry City Council will meet Aug. 5th to consider Fast Eddie’s Full Service Car Wash and Detail Center’s request for a liquor license.

The carwash is seeking a full bar liquor license, and owners Kim and Joe Doherty want to add video gambling as well if the license is approved, the article continued.

The city documents state that clients of the carwash can wait anywhere from 20 minutes to four hours for vehicle services to be completed, the article noted.

“It is vital that we continue to give people a reason to come inside and choose a car wash where you need to exit your vehicle,” the Dohertys wrote in a letter to the council.

The owners only plan to serve wine with a maximum of two drinks per customer, the article added.

“Many of our clients have expressed the desire to be able to game as they wait for their vehicles to be washed or detailed,” the Dohertys wrote. “As successful business owners, we know how important it is to listen to our customers.”

The owners also said they would not advertise the gaming on the storefront or road and that the alcohol would be confined to the gaming area only, the article stated.

“We realize gaming is not for everyone,” the Dohertys wrote. “Our plan allows for it to be accessible for those who would like to partake, but not bothersome for those who choose not to.”

The Doherty family made a similar request in 2018, but it never went before the council, the article continued.

The business may not be eligible for a full bar license because it doesn’t provide food or alcohol as part of its core business, City Administrator Derik Morefiled wrote in a memo to the council, according to the article.

UPDATE: According to a later article from the same publication, the council removed the carwash’s request from the agenda at the owners’ request.

The owners said they were out of town and unable to attend the meeting; furthermore, they are no longer sure if they wish to pursue the licenses and have postponed them indefinitely, the article stated.
