QUEENS, N.Y. — The battle between Off Broadway Car Wash owner David Amar, and the 16 employees of the wash, is over, with the “carwasheros” coming out on top, according to the Times Ledger.
“We came to a mutual agreement and they met all of our demands and we went back to work,” said UFCW 98 Organizer David Jimenez.
Jimenez said the workers and the union were thankful for all the community support provided to them. “We thank the neighbors that boycotted and shut the business down, but now people should come back and get their cars washed.”

Amar was accused of giving employees shorter shifts and fewer hours on the clock than the agreement the union had reached with him. He also was described by them as unwilling to negotiate. This led to a strike where workers were bolstered by elected officials who supported them.
The strike eventually ended with Amar giving in. Amar’s attorney did not agree with the union’s assertions. “We’ve always been prepared to negotiate but the union is in a very aggressive mode and it’s difficult to negotiate when one side is militant.”
