LOS ANGELES — Carwash businesses in the area have been cited for more than $1.3 million in wage theft fines by the California Labor Commission, according to Workerscompensation.com
Inspections found 35 carwashes did not register with the office as is required by law, noted the article. Several violations of wage and hour laws were found, affecting nearly 400 workers.
“These citations serve as a reminder that wage theft will not be tolerated,” said Christine Baker, director of the Department of Industrial Relations, in the article. The Labor Commissioner’s office targets its enforcement efforts on employers who intentionally skirt the law.”

Labor commissioner Julie A. Su also shared in the article that failure to register with the office “is often an indicator of wage theft.”
The violations resulted in penalties of $412,200 and damages of $308,584, reported the article. Some employers also received fines for not carrying workers’ compensation coverage.
